Fry the bacon in a heavy skillet over medium heat for about 6 minutes, turning once, until golden and crisp. Drain on paper towels.

Spread a thin, even layer of softened butter on one side of each bread slice.

Place one slice of bread buttered side down in a preheated skillet. Layer with cheddar, bacon, pickles, Swiss, then top with the second slice of bread, buttered side up. Press gently with a spatula.

Cook over medium-low heat for 3–4 minutes per side, pressing lightly, until the bread is deep golden and crisp and the cheese is melted.
