01 -
Spread a thin, even layer of softened butter over one side of each bread slice, covering all edges.
02 -
Heat a griddle or large skillet over medium heat. Arrange bread slices buttered side down in a single layer.
03 -
Place one slice of Swiss cheese on four of the bread slices as they toast. Cook until the bread is golden and cheese has melted, about 2 to 3 minutes.
04 -
Transfer the remaining four toasted bread slices to a work surface, toasted side down. Evenly spread about 1/3 cup chicken salad on each.
05 -
Top each chicken salad portion with a large romaine leaf and two tomato slices, gently pressing to secure the fillings.
06 -
Place the cheese-topped bread slices onto the assembled bottoms, cheese facing inward. Press lightly, cut each sandwich in half, and serve immediately.
